As we begin the holy season of Lent, the Church invites us into the desert with Jesus. In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus, after forty days of prayer and fasting, is tempted by the devil. Hungry, tired, and alone, He is tested, not when He is strong, but when He is vulnerable. And yet, each time, Jesus responds with faith, wisdom, and trust in His Father.
This Gospel reminds us that temptation often comes to us in similar moments: when we are tired, stressed, discouraged, or overwhelmed. We may begin with good intentions, wanting to follow God and live faithfully, yet we can easily become distracted or discouraged. The voice of temptation still whispers today: “Put yourself first. Take the easy way. Seek comfort, control, or success at any cost.”
Yet Jesus shows us another way.
In the desert, He remains faithful. He does what humanity has often failed to do; He trusts the Father completely. He teaches us that victory over temptation does not come from our own strength, but from staying rooted in God through prayer, Scripture, and trust. His obedience opens the way for us to live as faithful disciples.
Lent is not about making ourselves miserable. It is about making room for God. Through prayer, fasting, and generosity, we learn to say once again, “Lord, You come first in my life.” Lent is a season of repentance, renewal, and preparation for the joy of Easter.
Each of us has our own “deserts”, moments of struggle, doubt, and challenge. Yet in every desert, Jesus walks with us. He reminds us that holiness grows through small, daily choices: choosing forgiveness over resentment, honesty over convenience, generosity over selfishness, and faith over fear.
As we journey through this Lenten season together, I invite you to take a simple step this week. Each morning, pray: “Lord, help me choose You today.” And each evening, reflect: “Where did I choose God today?”
May this Lent deepen our trust in the Lord, strengthen our faith, and renew our hearts. As we follow Jesus from the desert to the cross and ultimately to the resurrection, may we grow ever closer to Him and to one another.
Be assured of my prayers for you and your families throughout this holy season.
